The citizens of Toronto have rallied around the corpse of a raccoon, making a somewhat ornate memorial for it as it lay dead on the sidewalk. It may seem like a sick thing to do, but there was an interesting reason for the memorial.
At 9:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 9th, a Toronto man reported the raccoon on the sidewalk to the city. After 12 hours, the city had failed to dispose of the raccoon, so the citizens opted to make it a memorial shrine to honor the life of the raccoon and draw attention to the fact that a public health issue wasn’t being addressed in a timely manner by the city. At around 11:00 P.M. that night, the memorial was over. Animal services came to pick up the raccoon.
