A woman in the United Kingdom found a spot on her thumb. Melanie Williams thought that it was just a wart or some kind of fungal infection.
But that’s not what it was at all.
“See that on my thumb? Do you know what it is? It’s skin cancer,” she wrote in a Facebook post last July, which was shared more than 100,000 times. “This grew from nothing in a matter of weeks. I thought it was just a fungal infection or a wart.”
She was lucky that her melanoma didn’t have the opportunity to spread before it was removed, but it is the most serious form of skin cancer. Each year, melanoma takes the lives of almost 10,000 people. When it’s found early, it’s almost 100% curable.
Williams is sharing her story with the world in the hopes that her situation will save the lives of more people in the future.
“I don’t want your sympathy, I want more awareness. Therefore, please go and get any changes or growths on your skin checked out, please tell people around you to get checked as well,” she wrote on Facebook. “So please, don’t leave comments about how brave I am or how sorry you are, instead take that time to share this or tell someone they need to get checked or make that phone call to the doctors for yourself.”
